Bruno Heinen & James Kitchman

ABOUT

In 2023, guitarist James Kitchman and pianist Bruno Heinen released their debut duo album “Rain Shadows” to critical acclaim.

“Rain Shadows” is the culmination of a rich and vibrant collaboration between two of the UK’s most innovative and intriguing jazz musicians. Across its eight tracks, the album traverses a colourful musical landscape; from bright optimism to the murky depths of despair, and back again.

A profound communion between the two musicians conjures a sound-world that feels familiar yet fresh.

As old friends, Kitchman and Heinen forged a strong musical bond during a monthly residency they held in one of London’s subterranean jazz clubs in 2017. Since then, the duo have worked together on Kitchman’s album “First Quartet” (Ubuntu Music), which received critical acclaim following its release last year. Kitchman has also appeared as a guest with Heinen’s star-studded group “The W“. More recently, they have performed regularly as a trio with renowned vocalist Heidi Vogel (The Cinematic Orchestra).

“The empathic relationship between Kitchman’s guitar and Bruno Heinen’s piano – forged across duo residencies – is naturally crucial. Heinen and Kitchman very much have their own voices, their own world. And we are welcomed in to relish it.”

“Heavenly gorgeousness.”
BBC Radio 3

“This album is different from Undercurrent but in many ways it’s similar: in its near-telepathy between the two players; in its lyricism; in its fluency and tasteful restraint. If [Bill] Evans and [Jim] Hall were around today, I like to think they’d dig this album too.”
London Jazz News

“Bruno Heinen – one of the very best jazz pianists in the UK at the very highest level technically and artistically – superb in recent times in duo with the fast rising guitarist James Kitchman.”
